Bangladesh's road and bridge network is the backbone of its economy — and one of the most demanding operating environments for infrastructure in Asia.
The Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department (RHD) manages ~22,000 km of national and regional highways including the Dhaka–Chittagong N1, Dhaka–Sylhet, Dhaka–Aricha, and the regional road network connecting Bangladesh's 64 districts.
Bangladesh has approximately 350,000 km of roads including national highways, district roads, union roads (LGED), and city corporation roads — one of the densest road networks relative to land area in Asia, carrying extraordinary traffic loads in a monsoon climate.

What design standard is used for road and bridge design in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh uses a combination of international standards adapted to local conditions: Roads and Highways Department (RHD) has its own Standard Design of Bridges and Culverts, Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Works, and Bangladesh Bridge Design Standards (BBDS). The BBDS is based on AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications with adaptations for Bangladesh loading (BD-24 truck loading) and seismic zone. Why do roads in Bangladesh deteriorate so quickly?
Rapid road deterioration in Bangladesh has several causes — most are engineering problems, not inevitable consequences of Bangladesh's climate: (1) Drainage failure — Roads that flood and drain poorly develop subgrade saturation, dramatically reducing CBR and pavement support. Inadequate camber, blocked side drains, and substandard cross-drainage cause most premature pavement failure. (2) Overloading — truck overloading well beyond design axle loads exponentially accelerates pavement damage. A truck 25% overloaded causes ~2× the pavement damage of a legal load. Road agencies struggle to enforce axle load limits. (3) Under-designed pavements — Pavement design that uses CBR values measured in dry season rather than post-monsoon wet season overstates subgrade strength by 2–5×. Pavements designed on dry-season CBR will fail prematurely in their first wet season. What is scour and why is it so dangerous for Bangladesh's bridges?
Scour is the erosion of riverbed and bank material around bridge foundations caused by flowing water — particularly during high-velocity flood flows.
