Roads & Highways
Engineering

Bangladesh is a country of diverse terrains and rapidly growing transport demands. Urban Engineering Limited designs and constructs roads, highways, bridges, and overpasses that connect communities, stimulate economic activity, and stand up to the rigours of Bangladesh's climate and traffic conditions.

Our roads and highways team applies innovative, sustainable design methodologies to deliver solutions for new road construction in urban and rural environments, widening and improvement of existing corridors, and the full spectrum of bridge engineering — from new-build to structural rehabilitation of ageing infrastructure.

WHAT WE OFFER

Our Roads & Highways Services

End-to-end road and transport infrastructure services — from feasibility and design through construction and inspection.

Bridge & Structure Design

Detailed structural design of highway bridges, pedestrian overpasses, box culverts, and flyovers — incorporating dead, live, wind, seismic, and vehicle impact loads in compliance with BNBC and AASHTO standards.

Bridge Safety Inspection & Analysis

Routine and special bridge inspections, condition assessment, non-destructive testing (NDT), structural analysis, and production of detailed inspection reports with maintenance recommendations.

Bridge Load Capacity Analysis

Structural capacity assessment and load rating of existing bridges to determine safe operating limits and identify strengthening or rehabilitation needs for ageing infrastructure.

Highway Design

Geometric design, pavement design, grading, drainage design, and road furniture planning for national highways, urban arterials, distributor roads, and rural feeder roads — new construction and widening/improvement.

Traffic Engineering & Design

Traffic impact assessments, intersection capacity analysis, signal timing optimisation, road safety audits, and design of traffic management schemes to improve safety and flow efficiency.

Construction Inspection & Management

On-site construction supervision, quality control, material testing, contractor management, and progress monitoring to ensure road and bridge works are built exactly to specification.

Road Engineering Capability
Technical Capabilities

Design & Engineering for Bangladesh's Transport Challenges

Bangladesh's transport network faces unique challenges — heavy monsoon rainfall, soft alluvial soils, high traffic volumes, and dense urban environments. Our road and highway team combines international best practice with deep local knowledge to engineer solutions that perform reliably in these conditions.

Pavement Design & Rehabilitation

Mechanistic-empirical pavement design for flexible and rigid pavements, including overlay design and full-depth reclamation approaches for rehabilitation of deteriorated road surfaces.

Drainage & Hydrology Design

Roadside drainage design, cross-drainage culverts, stormwater management, and flood-resilient design to protect road corridors from Bangladesh's intense monsoon rainfall events.

GIS & Survey Integration

Use of topographic surveys, satellite imagery, and GIS data to inform route alignment, right-of-way planning, and environmental sensitivity assessments for new road corridors.

Structural Analysis Software

Bridge and structure analysis using STAAD.Pro, CSiBridge, and SAP2000 — with detailed hand-check verification for all critical load combinations and code compliance.

OUR METHODOLOGY

Our Project Delivery Process

A structured approach to delivering road and highway projects — from survey to handover.

01
Survey & Feasibility

Topographic surveys, geotechnical investigation, traffic counts, hydrology studies, and route alignment options analysis to establish the project baseline.

02
Detailed Design

Geometric design, pavement design, drainage and structural design, BOQ preparation, and production of complete construction drawing packages and specifications.

03
Construction & Supervision

Site mobilisation, earthworks, roadbed preparation, pavement laying, bridge construction, drainage installation, and road furniture — supervised to specification.

04
Testing & Handover

Final quality testing, pavement deflection surveys, load tests on bridges, as-built documentation, regulatory clearances, and formal project handover to the client or authority.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about road and highway engineering, bridge design, and construction standards in Bangladesh.

  • What design standards govern highway and bridge engineering in Bangladesh?

Highway design in Bangladesh is primarily governed by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Design Standards and the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) for structural elements. Bridge design follows AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications alongside BNBC seismic and wind provisions. Pavement design references the AASHTO Pavement Design Guide and RHD Pavement Design Guidelines. Urban Engineering's design team is fully familiar with all applicable national and international standards and applies them rigorously on every project.

  • Bangladesh's intense monsoon rainfall and high groundwater table present significant challenges for pavement durability. Our design approach addresses these through: rigorous subgrade investigation and improvement using lime or cement stabilisation where necessary; selection of pavement layer thicknesses based on wet-season subgrade strength (CBR); effective roadside and subsurface drainage design to remove water quickly; use of premium bituminous mixes with polymer-modified binders for improved moisture resistance; and careful grading to achieve positive surface drainage across all lane widths. Drainage structures are always sized for extreme rainfall events to prevent flooding of road corridors.

  • A bridge load capacity analysis (also called a bridge load rating) determines the maximum safe vehicle load that an existing bridge can carry. It is required when: a bridge is being considered for heavier traffic than it was originally designed for; the bridge shows deterioration, cracking, or corrosion that may have reduced its structural capacity; a bridge has no design records and its safe load limit needs to be established; or before allowing oversized or special transport vehicles to cross. The analysis involves a structural inspection, collection of as-built data, and analytical assessment using AASHTO or equivalent methods. Urban Engineering conducts load capacity analyses for bridges across Bangladesh and provides clear load limit recommendations.

  • Yes. Urban Engineering Limited has extensive experience working with government agencies including the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), and city corporations on road and highway infrastructure projects. Our teams are fully familiar with government procurement procedures under the Public Procurement Act (PPA) and Public Procurement Rules (PPR), and can operate as design consultant, construction contractor, or supervision consultant depending on the contract arrangement. We have delivered road, bridge, and drainage infrastructure projects under government-funded and development partner-financed programmes across Bangladesh.
